About Ukana West CBHI
Ukana West 2 Community Based Health Initiative (CBHI) was born out of Concern for the increasing generally poor and inequitable access to quality and affordable healthcare service in Nigeria, which has made life very miserable for the citizens, and leads to short life expectancy, high morbidity and mortality of Nigerians.
CBHI was formed to address the issue of ailing health facilities, poor service delivery and uptake and inequitable access to quality healthcare services so that Nigeria can attain the UHC 2030. The CBHI scheme is currently being piloted in Ukana West Ward 2 in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. CBHI model is characterized by “Pooling at the Ward Level” with a “Community Trust Fund” at the local government level.
The Scheme is managed and supervised by community members (selected through an open process), State Ministry of Health Representative, Local Government Council Representative and National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Representative who make up the Board of Trustees (BOT), registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as an entity. The Secretariat is run daily by CBHI staff.
